Alfresco living
This time of year has us dreaming about longer days, lazy afternoons and balmy evenings. Summer isn’t that far away and with the Hunter’s great climate, Alfresco living is an integral part of family life.
There are many ways to enjoy yourself alfresco at home, whether it’s a deck, patio, outdoor room or even adjusting your existing house to have a more indoor-outdoor connection.
Having these features are big drawcards for potential buyers as well.
While the weather hasn’t really warmed up yet, now is the time to get moving with those dreams, so when summer rolls around, you can kick back and relax.
Decks and patios

Patios are built at ground level and can be made of any material – concrete, pavers, stones, tiles and so on. They are usually adjoining your house so you can walk straight out to it. A deck on the other hand is more of a platform and elevated, and generally made of wood. They can be used to take advantage of a view or due to uneven land. Decks have the added benefit of not letting water pool when it rains. Both are great places for meals, downtime and fun.
Pergolas and outdoor rooms

As we all know, the sun can get harsh in summer, as well as all year round. You might think about covering your deck or patio to provide shade so you don’t burn. It can also be shelter in the cooler months or when it gets windy. A pergola can be enclosed or open, essentially creating another room on your house. The addition of flyscreens to a pergola is a great way to keep pesky bugs out.
Backyard and landscaping

Having a backyard where the kids can run around in and play is the stuff of happy memories. The first step is looking after the lawn. Aerating, mowing and watering are key. Some shade and plants add atmosphere and keep it cool. Hang a hammock, grow a garden, install a swing, and you’ve got it made.
Bifold doors

Another way of integrating inside and out would be to open up the back of your house with folding glass doors. This would work especially well if you have a patio or deck off the living room already. It creates space and enhances the use of your outside area.
